What is a P2P transfer in practice?

In everyday use, a P2P transfer is what happens when you “send money” to someone using a modern wallet or banking app.
You pick the recipient, enter an amount, confirm, and the service moves funds from you to them, without needing to swap full bank account details or handle cash.

This is different from traditional methods:

  • No paper checks or physical cash.
  • No need to fill out wire transfer forms.
  • The app handles identity mapping and notifications.

For many users, P2P transfers have become the default way to move small amounts of money socially.

How a P2P transfer works

Although implementations differ, a typical P2P transfer follows this flow:

  1. Account setup
    The user creates an account with a P2P service or wallet, often inside a mobile app.
  2. Linking a funding source
    The user connects a bank account, card, or loads an in-app balance.
  3. Selecting a recipient
    The sender chooses who to pay using identifiers like phone number, email, username, or by scanning a QR code.
  4. Entering amount and confirming
    The sender specifies how much to send and confirms the transaction.
  5. Processing and settlement
    The platform deducts money from the sender’s funding source or balance and credits it to the recipient’s account or wallet.
  6. Recipient access
    The recipient sees the funds in their P2P account or wallet and can either spend from there or withdraw to a bank account.

Depending on the design, some transfers are purely internal (wallet-to-wallet), while others trigger external movements across banking rails.

Domestic vs international P2P transfers

P2P transfers can be:

  • Domestic
    Money moves between users within the same country and currency, often very quickly and at low cost.
  • International
    Money moves across borders, frequently involving currency conversion and additional checks. These transfers may be routed through specialized platforms or banking partners beneath the P2P interface.

International P2P transfers often feel similar to domestic ones from a user’s perspective, even though backend processes are more complex.
