A metal card is a credit, debit, or prepaid payment card whose physical body is made from metal or includes a metal core, rather than being fully plastic.
It functions like a normal payment card on the networks, but is heavier, more durable, and visually distinct, often used to signal a premium product tier and enhanced benefits.

How a metal card works

From a payments standpoint, a metal card behaves just like a plastic card:

  • It carries a chip and, where relevant, a magstripe and contactless antenna.
  • It uses a standard card network (such as Visa, Mastercard, etc.) and participates in usual authorization, clearing, and settlement processes.
  • It can be linked to credit, debit, or prepaid accounts, with the same functional logic as non-metal cards.

The difference lies in the construction:

  • The card body is manufactured using metal or combined metal–plastic layers.
  • Card details are typically engraved or laser-etched onto the metal surface.
  • The weight and feel are intentionally distinct, giving a more solid, “premium” tactile experience.

In short, metal is about how the card feels and looks, not about how the payment rails work.

Types of metal cards

Issuers use several main construction types:

  • Full metal cards
    The entire card body is made from metal, offering maximum weight and premium feel.
  • Embedded metal (metal core) cards
    Cards that include a metal core or plate sandwiched between plastic layers, combining metal “substance” with more traditional manufacturing and card personalization processes.
  • Half-metal or hybrid cards
    Designs where metal is used partially (for example, a metal front with a plastic back) to balance cost, weight, and compatibility with equipment.

All of these are colloquially called “metal cards” because they feel and present as more substantial than standard plastic cards.

Why issuers offer metal cards

Issuers use metal cards for several reasons:

  • Premium positioning
    Metal cards visually and physically signal a higher tier product with exclusive benefits, often targeting affluent or trend-driven customers.
  • Brand differentiation
    A sleek, heavy card helps a brand stand out from competitors and conveys a sense of quality and innovation.
  • Customer engagement
    The tactile experience of handling and tapping a metal card can encourage cardholders to put it “top-of-wallet” and use it more frequently.
  • Perceived durability
    Metal cards typically resist bending, cracking, and everyday wear better than standard plastic, which can reduce replacement frequency.

They are often paired with richer rewards, higher limits, and lifestyle perks, but the metal itself is primarily about how the product is experienced and perceived.

Functionally, both metal and plastic cards:

  • Use the same payment networks.
  • Support chip, contactless, and (where present) magstripe operations.
  • Can be credit, debit, or prepaid products.

Differences:

  • Material and feel
    Metal cards are heavier, cooler to the touch, and often feel more solid and premium.
  • Durability
    Metal cards tend to be more resistant to physical wear and breakage, though they may scratch differently from plastic.
  • Cost and positioning
    Metal cards cost more to produce and are usually offered at higher tiers, often with increased fees or spend requirements.
