KYC

Learn what KYC, how it works, and why it matters for prepaid, debit and crypto cards.

Short definition (lead paragraph) KYC, or Know Your Customer, is the compliance process used to identify and verify customers before or during a financial relationship. It is a core part of the broader AML framework and helps institutions understand who the customer is and what level of risk they may present. KYC is a fundamental requirement for regulated card, banking and crypto products.

Key points / Quick facts

  • KYC verifies customer identity and supports risk assessment.
  • It is usually mandatory for regulated financial services.
  • It often includes document collection, identity checks and monitoring.
  • Higher-risk products may require enhanced checks.
  • Crypto cards and on-ramps usually rely on completed KYC before full access is granted.

What is KYC?

KYC is the process by which a financial provider comes to know the legal and operational identity of its customer. It exists because money movement without identity controls creates serious fraud, sanctions and money-laundering risks. In digital products, KYC is both a compliance necessity and a major onboarding experience.

How KYC works

The institution collects personal details, identity evidence and sometimes address or financial-source information. It then verifies those details through documents, databases, biometrics and risk screening. Once the user is accepted, the relationship may still be monitored and periodically refreshed.

Why KYC matters

KYC is the gateway to regulated functionality. Without it, many products cannot safely offer cards, fiat movement, withdrawals, credit or high limits. For product design, the challenge is making KYC rigorous enough for compliance while still keeping onboarding smooth and understandable.

Types / examples

Examples include standard retail KYC, business verification, higher-tier KYC for premium limits and enhanced KYC for higher-risk or higher-value relationships. In crypto cards, these layers often map directly to product access.
