Interest rate

Learn what Interest rate, how it works, and why it matters for prepaid, debit and crypto cards.

Short definition (lead paragraph) An interest rate is the price paid for borrowing money over a period of time. It is usually expressed as a percentage of the borrowed amount and can apply to credit cards, loans and other credit facilities. Interest rates are a core part of the economics of borrowing, including crypto-backed borrowing structures.

Key points / Quick facts

  • Interest is the time-based cost of borrowed funds.
  • The rate may be fixed, variable or tiered.
  • It is related to but not always identical to APR.
  • Interest affects total repayment cost significantly over time.
  • In crypto lending, interest interacts with collateral and market risk.

What is an interest rate?

An interest rate tells the borrower how expensive access to money is. The lower the rate, the cheaper the borrowing cost; the higher the rate, the more expensive it is to carry debt. Even when users focus on rewards or convenience, interest often has the largest long-term economic effect.

How an interest rate works

The lender applies the rate to the borrowed principal according to the product terms and accrual method. Charges may accrue daily, monthly or according to another schedule. In revolving products, the actual amount paid depends on how long the user carries the balance.

Why interest rates matter

Users can underestimate borrowing cost when they focus only on access to credit. Interest determines the financial trade-off between paying immediately and financing spending over time. For crypto-backed products, rate analysis must be combined with collateral and conversion considerations.

Types / examples

Examples include fixed loan rates, variable rates, promotional rates and rates on secured crypto borrowing lines. Each creates different cost behavior under real usage.
