Short definition (lead paragraph) An identity document is an official document used to prove a person’s identity. It usually includes a name, date of birth, photograph and identifying number, and is typically issued by a government authority. Identity documents are core evidence in KYC and identity verification for card, banking and crypto products.

Key points / Quick facts

  • Identity documents establish formal proof of identity.
  • Common examples include passports, national ID cards and driver’s licences.
  • They are central to KYC and onboarding.
  • Digital products often scan and validate them remotely.
  • Validity, quality and authenticity are essential for acceptance.

What is an identity document?

An identity document is the most familiar formal expression of personal identity in regulated systems. It allows institutions to anchor a digital application to a legally recognized real-world person. Without such a document, many financial relationships cannot proceed beyond minimal access.

How identity documents work in onboarding

The customer submits the document in person or through a digital flow. The provider checks whether it is genuine, current and consistent with the other information provided. Additional biometric or database checks may then confirm that the document belongs to the applicant.

Why identity documents matter

Identity documents are a foundation of trust in remote finance. They enable KYC, reduce impersonation risk and support secure issuance of cards and access to fiat-related services. For crypto-card products, they are often the first mandatory artifact in the compliance journey.

Types / examples

Examples include passports, national identity cards, residence permits and driver’s licences where accepted. Some jurisdictions or products accept additional forms of government-issued identification.
