What is a card token?

A card token represents a single payment card within a secure tokenization system. When a cardholder adds a card to an app, wallet, or merchant account, the system can request a card token and then use that token wherever it would previously have used the raw card number.

From the outside, the card token behaves like a card identifier: it can be stored, used for new transactions, and linked to a customer profile. Internally, the tokenization service maintains the relationship between that card token and the underlying card, ensuring that payment requests using the token are correctly routed and authorized.

The key idea is that card tokens let digital systems “remember” and “reuse” cards without ever needing to keep the actual card numbers in those systems.

How card tokens are created and used

Card tokens are created through the card tokenization process. A typical flow looks like this:

  1. Card capture
    The user enters card details or scans/adds a card in a wallet or app.
  2. Tokenization request
    The app, merchant, or payment provider sends the card details to a tokenization service and asks for a card token.
  3. Token issuance
    The tokenization service generates a unique token representing that card and stores the mapping between token and card in its secure environment.

    The app or merchant receives the card token and stores it instead of the actual card number.
  5. Payment using the token
    When a transaction is initiated later, the app or merchant sends the card token rather than the PAN. The tokenization service looks up the corresponding card and processes the payment.

Because each card token is linked to exactly one card and created under specific rules, the same card might have different tokens for different merchants, devices, or wallets, depending on how the ecosystem is designed.

Types of card tokens

The term “card token” can refer to several closely related token types in practice:

  • Merchant card tokens
    Tokens created for a card in relation to a single merchant or payment gateway, used for saved cards and subscriptions on that merchant.
  • Network card tokens
    Tokens issued by card networks to represent a card across multiple digital commerce contexts, often with advanced lifecycle management and security features.
  • Device‑specific card tokens
    Tokens representing a card in a particular device or wallet (for example, each phone gets its own token for the same underlying card).
  • Issuer or platform card tokens
    Internal tokens used by banks or fintech platforms to represent cards within their own services and APIs.

All of these are “card tokens” in the sense that they act as card identities, with the underlying PAN kept out of ordinary data flows.

In digital wallets and app‑based card products, the concept of a card token is central. When a user adds a card to a wallet, they are effectively asking the system to create a tokenized representation of that card for that wallet and device.

The wallet then uses its card token for payments:

  • The token travels through the payment flow instead of the PAN.
  • Additional security data (such as per‑transaction cryptograms) may accompany the token.
  • The merchant and most intermediaries never see the actual card number.

From the user’s perspective, it still feels like “their card.” From the system’s perspective, the card token is the active identifier representing that card in wallet transactions.

In fintech and crypto card products, card tokens often serve as the bridge between app‑level card controls and the underlying card rails. The product may manage limits, freezes, or currency conversions, but the actual card credentials the outside world sees are tokens, not PANs.
